Inside and Outside - Area and Perimeter

We have a whole new planner for you to have a look at.

This unit is aimed at Year 5 students.

This one is about area and perimeter and takes the students through 15 tasks.
There is a planner for the teacher to follow.
The tasks would probably go over two weeks and not one as suggested - we all tend to over plan.
Visit our digital shops to access them.

A total of 33 pages- this unit includes a 2 page planner. This planner is designed to allow students to choose their own tasks. Depending on the level of your students, you may direct some to certain tasks. This planner may go over two weeks.
There are
‘I can’ statements x4 – print and display. These are referenced throughout the unit
Task 1 - Perimeter of regular shapes
Task 2 – Area of regular shapes
Task 3 – Perimeter of irregular shapes
Task 4 – Area of irregular shapes
Task 5 – Calculate area and perimeter
Task 6 – Design a picture for area and perimeter
Task 7 – Shapes with the same area
Task 8 – Formal calculations
Task 9 – Paddocks with a difference
Task 10 – The area of your name
Task 11 – Design a house – research how the area of a house is measured
Task 12– Design a garden bed
Task 13 – Desks in your class
Task 14 – Area of an object
Task 15– Zoo or Farm
Please leave us feedback and email any suggestions you may have.....

A Maths Game Link up

Depending on which side of the world you live in, it will be either be Math or Maths. Where we are, it is Maths. Last Sunday I posted a game you could use to establish fluency in counting while throwing a dice and making a unifix wall.

Our game for this week is Fair Go with dominoes - it is a game for two players. Empty the dominoes on the table face down. Take it in turns to choose two dominoes and if the collection is an even number you get a point - add both sides of the dominoes. The winner is the one who gets to ten points first.
This helps to add to collections quickly as well determine if it is an even number.

This week we are putting a linky up to add your own game. (Hoping it works)

The rules are simple.

1. Copy the button into your post and link back to our site.
2. Make a post about a Maths game that helps your students with fluency in Maths.
3. Come back and add your post link to the linky tool.

Everything is Ship Shape!

This week has brought with it a little bit of Mathematical fun! Exploring shapes, patterns and transformations is proving to be not only engaging but a great way of providing success for all!

Below you will find a link to 'Shaping Up - Patterns and Transformation' a unit designed to complement 'Shaping Up - 2D shapes and 3D objects' posted last week. This unit is aimed at AusVELS Level 2 but includes activities that are suitable for Year 1 - 3 students.

The Measurement and Geometry strand can often be a section of Maths, in which students who struggle with numbers, can excel. It is also an area of Maths, that when delivered through the proficiencies of 'Understanding' and 'problem Solving', can be transferred immediately to student's own lives. They are more easily able to 'see' solutions to practical/logistical problems around them. Although we are aware of the importance of consolidating student's understanding of number, it is equally important to provide a balanced program for all.

Build a wall with dice

We will be posting ideas for games that will compliment the iSURF(c) approach to the Australian Curriculum and AusVELS every Sunday night! So watch this space and spread the word.

This week it is "Build a wall with dice"

This game uses Solving Problems and Fluency from our iSURF(c) approach
You will need
A six sided dice
Unifix - or any blocks that will stack - or grid paper

You can play in pairs or as a whole class using blocks on the Smartboard and a large dice

Rules
Decide what the wall will be ie 10x6 or 12x10, or whatever number facts you may be working on
Take it in turns and roll the dice
The first player stacks the number of blocks that has been rolled
The second player, rolls and may choose to put their blocks next to or on top of
The winner is the one who completes the wall

You may use addition or subtraction, add extension/support by using a 4/8/10/20 sided dice
or
use grid paper and two colours - one for each player

Welcome to Term 3!

Welcome back to all Victorian teachers who, this week, have kicked off Term 3. We hope you have had a great start and are settling back into your school routines (or even starting some new ones!).

Planning has been a key emphasis this week and I (Kerry) have enjoyed spending time with staff - crouched over laptops, undertaking professional reading, exploring resources and text books, and discussing all things 'curriculum'. A special shout out to our 1/2 Team (C, A & J!) for their efforts on Tuesday!

In preparation for this term, we are adding extra units of work. 'Shaping Up’ is a unit of work for Year One and Two students, on 2D shapes and 3D objects. Students explore the language and features of both 2D shapes and 3D objects, as well as look at these in their environment. It includes a variety of graphic organsiers, along with a range of independent/small group problem solving tasks. 'Shaping Up' covers all iSURF elelments...
individual goals     problem Solving     Understanding     Reasoning      and     Fluency

Keep your eyes open for an accompanying unit of work on shapes and transformation - coming soon!

Workshop options for iSURF(c)

During a planning meeting yesterday where we spent time looking at our next units for publishing we also looked at some workshop options for delivering the message for iSURF(c).

This is our response to the new Australian Curriculum initiative that uses the four Proficiency Statements to cover the content.

We have a free overview and some samples of work that are free when you visit our digital stores. Download them and see how you could use iSURF(c) to assist in the delivery of your own maths program.

We are offering workshop options to assist schools and teachers to use our iSURF(c) Maths.
Contact us - kpisurf@gmail.com and we can develop a program for you.

Making Sense of Percent - Level 6

We thought it was time to add another unit of work.

This one is for Level 6 - (Year 6, Grade 6) and is from the domain of Number and Algebra and is reliant on all four proficiency strands - Solving Problems, Understanding, Reasoning and Fluency.

The unit is planned using the philosophy outlined in our Manual and our Editable Planner. The plan is documented using our 'weekly planner' but the tasks are open ended and may go beyond a week.

The idea of this structure is to allow you to work with a group as a focus group and then send them back into the open ended task.
